The Cold Grip of Fear: 3 Things Nigerians Should Expect After March 28

Are you afraid?

It's only a natural reaction if you live in Nigeria, a country where one can almost set the time by post-election violence if we're to go by our antecedents.

And here we are: six days to the election and fears have peaked. What with political experts and Christian prophets alike prophesying the bleakest of dooms on the polity, it's okay if your heart skips a beat or two. Natural, even.

In times like this, a little foresight helps.

Here is what we think will happen after the elections, after a cursory study of the current political temperature:

1. NIGERIA WON'T GO TO WAR

That's the real fear for many people. While it looks like Nigeria is on the brink of serious social meltdown, we daresay this won't be the case. There will be the usual protests (we sincerely hope there are no casualty figures, but these things are almost inevitable), but there wouldn't be anything to upset the scale as observed from previous elections.

The polarity that we experience right now will be quickly dismantled (we hope) in the face of the fact that Nigeria has since been voting for the lesser of two devils anyway.

2. JEGA MAY ACHIEVE EVEN NEW LEVELS OF UNWANTED FAME
This is is APC wins, of course. The PDP will call the elections 'manipulated' and accuse Jega of complicity in the rigging of the elections in favor of the APC. We should expect to see some florid court cases to buttress this POV.

3. IF APC LOSES, EVERY SINGLE GOVERNMENT MACHINERY WILL FEEL THEIR FURY
From the soldiers to the PVCs which they laud right now - none will be shielded from the APC's formidable PR system. Soldiers will be accused of intimidating the innocent public and helping in rigging, the PVC will be deemed compromised by PDP's Israeli connection, and the 'stomach infrastructure'(which both parties are guilty of using to various degrees) will be denigrated and staunchly rebuked.

It will be a verbal and physical onslaught, people!

While everything else is uncertain, you can be very sure of this: the loser in the forthcoming elections will not be showing a display of sportsmanship by congratulating the winner.
